1842-O 25C Small Date MS63 NGC. Briggs 1-A, later die
1842-O<25C> Small Date MS63 NGC. Briggs 1-A, later die state. An important offering for the specialist, the 1842-O Small Date is not only an absolute rarity but is also a premier condition rarity, being unpriced in the Guide Book above AU50. This coin is tied with one other as the finest-graded example of this rare quarter. The surfaces are lustrous and toned in multiple layerings of lilac, rose, gray, cobalt-blue and gold. It is weakly struck in the centers, not a typical occurrence for Small Date quarters, but one that apparently is common to the later die state of the 1-A dies. In the center of the reverse one notices a large depression on the left upper half of the shield and on the eagle's neck area. Apparently some foreign matter adhered to the die, and the coins struck afterward all show this depression and subsequent lack of detail. Briggs estimates that this later die state accounts for only 10% or so of the '42-O Small Date population. This coin represents an opportunity to acquire one of the two finest-known examples of this extreme rarity--an opportunity that is unlikely to be repeated anytime in the near future. Census: 2 in 63, 0 finer (7/06).
