1842-O[$2 1/2] MS61 NGC.
1842-O<$2 1/2> MS61 NGC. The 1842-O began with a modest mintage of only 19,800 pieces, lowest among quarter eagles from the New Orleans mint. Only 65-70 coins are believed extant in all grades, the '42-O ranking second in overall rarity among O-mint quarter eagles, second only to the 1845-O. The '42-O is also a significant condition rarity, and Winter (1992) states that "the great majority of extant 1842-O Quarter Eagles grade Very Fine." Over the past several years a number of previously unrecorded Mint State coins have been certified, with a total of 20 pieces certified today in MS60-64 grades. Of course, this figure is somewhat inflated by inevitable resubmissions so the actual number of Uncirculated pieces is probably more on the order of 12-14 coins. This example is tied with several others at the lower end of the Condition Census. The 1842-O is a notoriously weakly struck issue, and this piece also shows soft details on most of the obverse stars, Liberty's hair, and the eagle's left (facing) leg. The surfaces are golden-orange in color with soft, satin-like mint luster. The only mark of note (for pedigree purposes) is a short, angling nick in the field below the O in OF on reverse. An impressive example of this widely recognized O-mint rarity. Population: 4 in 61, 5 finer (4/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
