1842-O $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. This issue's original mintage of 19,800 pieces is the lowest among Quarter Eagles from the New Orleans Mint. With just 65-70 coins believed extant, the '42-O ranks second in overall rarity among O-mint Two-and-a-Halves after the 1845-O. The former date is also a significant condition rarity, and Winter (1992) states that "the great majority of extant 1842-O Quarter Eagles grade Very Fine." This is the first Choice AU representative that we have offered since another PCGS-certified example appeared as lot 8158 in our Denver ANA Signature Sale (8/1996). Although Winter states that the '42-O is "always" softly struck, this coin displays overall bold definition. True, the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers are somewhat indistinct, but all other design elements are uncommonly well impressed. The surfaces are moderately abraded, as befits the grade, with warm olive-gold and honey-gold coloration. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
