1842-D $5 Small Date MS61 PCGS. Ex: Chestatee. Winter 6-E. Formerly sold as lot 7682 in our 1999 FUN Sale of the Chestatee Collection, where it was described as, " Struck in light green-gold, as is common for Dahlonega half eagles of this era, and sharply detailed on both sides. The luster is undisturbed and has a pleasing, satiny appearance. High grade examples of this issue are either seen with an odd, slightly prooflike texture or with satiny luster as on this piece. The surfaces are clean with no deep abrasions. For the sake of identification, we note a small, curved mint-made lintmark at the outer points of the fifth star. The 1842-D Small Date uses a reverse similar to that found on the 1839-1841 half eagles from this mint. The mintmark is small and positioned above the V in FIVE. There are an estimated 150-175 survivors known and the grades most often seen are VF and XF. In AU, this is a scarce and underrated issue, with approximately two dozen pieces in existence. Mint State 1842-D Small Date Half Eagles are very rare. They are even more desirable when one considers that date collectors have to focus on this variety when adding a high grade 1842-D Half Eagle to their sets...
