1842-D $5 Small Date AU58 PCGS. Winter 6-E, the only known dies. This variety (37,917 pieces produced) is more readily obtainable than its similarly dated Large Date variant. It is, however, a conditionally challenging coin that is most often encountered in grades no finer than XF. Writing in 1997, Doug Winter opines that only 20-22 coins are extant at the various levels of About Uncirculated preservation. Minimally rubbed, this near-Mint survivor retains ample evidence of an above average strike that, while not full, is appreciably bold throughout. Rich olive-gold and orange-gold colors are well blended over surfaces that display an expected number of mostly small abrasions for a lightly circulated Dahlonega Mint Five. The '42-D Small Date ranks 18th in high grade (AU-Mint State) rarity among the 26 U.S. Half Eagles from this branch mint (this per Winter, 1997). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
