1842-D $5 Large Date MS61 PCGS.
1842-D $5 Large Date MS61 PCGS. Large Date and Letters. Variety 9-G. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Reverse of 1842. The only die variety known for this issue.RARITY INFORMATION: The 1842-D Large Date half eagle has a reported mintage figure of 21,691 pieces, but it is possible that this is incorrect given the small number of coins that have survived. This is the second rarest Dahlonega half eagle in terms of the total number known and it is unquestionably the rarest in high grades. There are 85-95 examples accounted for today and more than 80% of these are in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine range. In About Uncirculated, this is a very rare coin with seven to nine accurately graded pieces known. In Uncirculated, there are just two 1842-D Large Date half eagles: the Green Pond specimen and the Duke's Creek/Eliasberg coin which, although "only" graded AU58 by PCGS, is recognized by specialists as the finest known for the issue.STRIKE: The strike is sharp and even with good details noted in the centers and around the borders. This is an issue that is generally seen with a good strike.SURFACES: It is nearly impossible to find an 1842-D Large Date half eagle that is not covered with deep, detracting abrasions. This piece is remarkably clean. There are some light, shallow handling marks in the fields, but none are plainly visible to the unaided eye. We wish to stress the extreme rarity of this issue with choice surfaces, and the Green Pond coin is one of only two we are aware of (the Duke's Creek/Eliasberg coin being the other) that has above average surfaces.LUSTER: There is a good deal of original mint luster present on both sides with some minor breaks visible in the fields. Because most examples of this variety are well worn, there are not many 1842-D Large Date half eagles that show any luster. More remarkable is the fact that this is a mostly original coin that has not been overzealously cleaned or processed, as commonly seen on this issue.COLORATION: Light green-gold color shows splashes of underlying orange and rose hues. This is an exceptionally challenging issue to locate with good color.EYE APPEAL: When available, the typical 1842-D half eagle is a heavily bagmarked Very Fine that has been repeatedly cleaned. The Green Pond coin is exceptional for the issue with a good strike, nice surfaces and luster, and pleasing color. It is the second finest example known and with the Duke's Creek/Eliasberg coin off the market for the foreseeable future, the importance of this offering becomes more apparent to the serious Dahlonega collector. It is clearly a highlight of the Green Pond Collection.COMPARABLES: No third-party certified Uncirculated 1842-D half eagle has ever sold at public auction. The finest known, a PCGS AU58, now in the Duke's Creek collection, sold for a then-incredible $24,200 in Bowers and Ruddy's October 1982 Eliasberg Collection Auction.PEDIGREE: Obtained via Doug Winter in January 1999; Ex: North Georgia Collection/1999 FUN Sale (Heritage, 1/99), lot 7684, where it realized an impressive $36,800. This is the plate coin in the second edition of "Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, 1838-1861" by Doug Winter. It is listed in the current Condition Census as the second finest known.
