<B>1842-D $5 Large Date AU55 NGC.</B></I> Variety 9-G. The two varieties of 1842-D half eagles are known as the Large Date and Small Date, but the reverses differ as well. The Small Date variety has a Small Letters reverse, while the Large Date features a more crowded Large Letters reverse. Douglas Winter (2003) gives the Large Date mintage as 21,691 pieces, with 85 to 95 extant coins, and the Small Date mintage as 37,917, with 175 to 200 known examples.<BR> Traces of luster reside in the protected areas of this Choice AU example, and yellow-gold surfaces display a faint green cast, along with sharply defined design elements. Light contact marks are evenly distributed over each side, but do not approach the severity usually seen, as alluded to by Winter: "The surfaces on nearly every known example are extremely heavily abraded and have a choppy appearance."
