1842-D $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Winter 3-E, the only known dies. The 1842-D (4,643 pieces produced) is tied with the 1852-D as the sixth rarest Quarter Eagle from the Georgia branch mint. In high grade, the '42-D is the third rarest, being surpassed in this regard by only the 1840-D and 1855-D. A mere 60-65 coins are believed extant with most of these grading no finer than VF. At the time he wrote the book Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint: 1838-1861 (1997) Winter had not seen a Mint State coin, and his Condition Census included only AU representatives. The present example is the single finest certified 1842-D in today's hobby (7/02), and it is certainly one of, if not the finest coin extant. Both sides are bright with green-gold undertones that warm to yellow-gold shades at direct angles. Scattered wispy abrasions account for the MS60 designation, but we stress that the above average strike adds considerably to the overall eye appeal. Whereas many '42-D Quarter Eagles show evidence of blunt striking in isolated areas both in the centers and toward the peripheries, this coin possesses an overall bold impression. The depression on Liberty's cheek is Mint-made and characteristic of several examples of this date. It would be difficult for us to overstate the importance of this Brilliant Uncirculated D-mint Quarter Eagle for advanced collectors who specialize in gold from the Southern branch mints.
