1842-D $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Winter 3-E. The 1842-D is a very rare issue in all grades. It ranks sixth in overall rarity among Dahlonega Quarter Eagles and narrowly trails the 1840-D as the scarcest D-mint struck prior to 1853. It also ranks third in high grade rarity with the Condition Census populated almost exclusively by AU coins (only one MS60 has been certified). This piece is just a bit softly struck over the devices with deep orange-gold color and there is a band of satiny luster around the peripheral stars on the obverse. A thin planchet lamination on the cheek of Liberty is a mint-made imperfection and has no effect on the coin's grade; in fact, many examples of this issue are seen with planchet flaws. Otherwise the surfaces are remarkably clean for the issue with the only other noticeable flaw being a small alloy spot to the right of the eagle's right (facing) wing.Ex: James A.
