1842-D $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Variety 3-F. The 1842-D quarter eagle is widely acknowledged as one of the most difficult pieces of Dahlonega gold to acquire. Of the original mintage of 4,643 pieces, it is estimated by Winter that only 75 to 85 exist in all grades, with About Uncirculated examples a small fraction of that. Although NGC records five Mint State examples, PCGS has graded none, and it is impossible to know exactly how many of those pieces represent resubmissions. On this Choice AU piece, the wheat-gold surfaces retain soft but significant peripheral luster. The devices, which have minor but distinct wear and a handful of long, thin abrasions, possess above-average detail nonetheless. A handful of flaws and handling marks affect the fields as well. Still, this is an important opportunity to acquire a high-grade circulated example of this often-elusive issue.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
