1842-D $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Variety 3-F. A
1842-D<$2 1/2> AU55 NGC. Variety 3-F. A generous portion of ruby-tinged luster remains on this boldly struck and lightly circulated representative. Southern gold expert Douglas Winter, in his 2003 Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, states that the 1842-D is the tied with the 1856-D as the second rarest D-mint quarter eagle in high grades. He also states that, for the 1842-D, "the stars are flat and few of them show their radial lines at the centers. The reverse is always weak at the center with softness noted on the neck of the eagle, the shield, and the right leg." The present piece is an exception to those comments, since the strike is both consistent and pleasing. The surfaces are also smooth, save for a small depression on the obverse rim at 3 o'clock and a minor ding at 10 o'clock. A low mintage of 4,643 pieces ensures a paucity of quality survivors.
