1842-C $5 Small Date XF40 PCGS. Winter 4-C, the only known dies. Die State I. The first 4,595 Half Eagles to emerge from the Charlotte Mint in 1842 displayed a small date logotype like that found on 1840 and 1841-dated examples. While Mint personnel used only one set of dies for this delivery, two die states are known. Die State I is attributable by the absence of an obverse rim cud at 12:00, and it accounts for only about 25% of extant examples. As a whole, the 1842-C Small Date is the rarest Half Eagle produced in the Charlotte Mint, and it is also the most difficult to locate in high (AU-Mint State) grades. Most often encountered in Fine or VF, Winter notes that properly graded Extremely Fine coins are "about as nice as one can generally hope to find." This is a very pleasing coin for the grade with rich copper-gold coloration and overall bold definition within the context of the XF level. The wear which is present is light and evenly distributed, and the scattered distractions (most of which are in the fields) do not include many singularly mentionable blemishes. In fact, were it not for pedigree concerns, we would probably not even make note of a tiny scrape in the obverse field below the first two digits in the date.
