1842-C $5 Small Date VF25 PCGS. Variety 4-C. The Small Date '42-C has the lowest mintage of any Charlotte half eagle, and it is also the rarest. It is the second-rarest of all Charlotte coins, second only to the legendary 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar. Only 35-40 pieces are believed extant out of the estimated 4,595 coins struck. This is an early die state, showing none of the die break or rim cud that later developed after the obverse die broke. The surfaces are somewhat granular and porous. Good obverse details with slight softness on the reverse and showing light reddish patina around the devices on each side. Of the greatest importance to any serious collector of this series.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
