1842-C $5 Small Date Fine 15 PCGS. Variety 4-C. Die State I. This is the rarest of all the Charlotte half eagles, excepting only the 1849-C, Open Wreath issue. The present example shows the early die state, without the obverse rim break above star 7. Despite considerable wear, this coin shows a pleasing amount of detail remaining for the grade, including the deep definition on Liberty's hair, and most of the definition in the eagle's wing interiors. The color is a light honey-gold, with hazel highpoints, and there are no heavy scrapes or abrasions. Winter's reference on Charlotte Mint coins estimates that 35 to 40 examples exist in all grades. This affordable example should see spirited competition among Charlotte gold specialists.
From The Carolina Gold Collection, Part Two.
