1842-C[$5] Large Date MS64 NGC.
1842-C<$5> Large Date MS64 NGC. Variety 5-C, Die State I. The two die states provide only minor differences. The early die state coins as offered here were struck from perfect dies while the later die state coins had minor crumbling of the reverse die around the first two letters of STATES. Scarce and underappreciated, the Large Date is often overshadowed by its Small Date counterpart. However, both are rarities in their own right. The Small Date is the rarest C-mint half eagle, while the Large Date is the fifth rarest in the series. Total mintage for the 1842-C half eagles of both varieties was 28,184 coins (according to most references, with the current Guide Book recording a total of 27,432). Of this total, it is generally accepted that almost 84% of these were the Large Date variety. However, according to Doug Winter, approximately 60% of the total known population are the Large Date variety.
Only 80-90 pieces are believed known today in all grades with perhaps as few as five or six in Uncirculated condition. This piece is listed as second finest known by Winter. The finest known Milas Collection coin is only marginally nicer, having been graded MS64 by NGC and then regraded MS65 by the same service. After these two coins, the Bass Collection MS63 example and three or four lower Mint State grade coins round out the Condition Census.
This is an absolutely splendid example that has bright green-gold coloration. The striking details are also fully brought up in all areas, including the peripheral stars, Liberty's hair curls, even the feathers on the eagle's neck. The fields show evidence of light die striations which aid greatly in imparting a bright, semi-prooflike sheen to the fields. There are several tiny marks scattered about, but few that could be used as pedigree identifiers. Perhaps the configuration of tiny marks in the lower left obverse field is enough to identify this important coin for pedigree purposes.
Ex: Florida dealer, 8/98. Population: 1 in 64, 1 finer (7/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
