1842-C $5 Large Date MS63 PCGS. Winter 5-C. Die State I. This important, high grade example was formerly offered as lot 6240 in our 1999 February Long Beach Sale, where it was described as, "Even though it has been repeated over and over, it bears mentioning again that the Large Date variant from 1842 is a scarce issue in its own right. But it is one that is fated to live in obscurity because it is overshadowed by the legendary Small Date. Only five (now ten) Mint State pieces are currently known out of an estimated 80-90 coins believed to exist in all grades. This is the third finest known. The surfaces are bright and lovely with a semi-reflective glint in the fields and very few abrasions. The most noticeable marks are a nick on the nose of Liberty, a scrape to the right of the mintmark, and a cluster of abrasions to the right of the eagle's head. Attractive reddish-coppery patina covers each side."Ex: Stanley Elrod Collection; William Miller Collection (Heritage, 2/99), lot 6240, where it brought $21,850.From the Ashland City Collection.
