1842-C $2 1/2 XF45 NGC. Quarter Eagle production at the Charlotte Mint amounted to just 6,729 coins in 1842. As one might surmise from this figure, the '42-C is one of the rarest gold coins struck at this branch mint. It is actually the third rarest C-mint Two-and-a-Half after the 1843-C Small Date and 1855-C, and it is the rarest in high grade (AU and finer). One of just 55-65 coins believed extant (per Winter), this is an obviously important representative with dominant green-gold color. The strike is typical of the date, but the wear is minimal and evenly distributed. The scattered abrasions include a moderate reeding mark in the obverse field behind the bun at the back of Liberty's head. Over the past decade, we have handled only two other 1842-C Quarter Eagles in XF45: 1. Ex: FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/1998), lot 7530, where it realized $3,565. An NGC-certified example. 2. Ex: Sacramento ANA National Money Sale (Heritage, 3/1999), lot 6599, where it realized $3,680. This coin was also certified by NGC.The present example is Ex: Chicago ANA Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/1999), lot 5554, where it realized $2,013. The coin was Uncertified at the time of that sale.
