1842-C $2 1/2 XF40 PCGS. Variety 3-B. The '42-C is one of the rarest Charlotte quarter eagles, and one of the rarest coins of any denomination ever struck at that Mint. Only 55 to 65 pieces are estimated to exist, with the majority falling into the VF grade level. It becomes extremely rare in XF, the grade of the present example. Apricot-gold patination reveals lime-green accents, and the design elements display better-than-average detail, though some of the star centers and eagle's plumage are soft. While most known pieces are heavily marked, the surfaces on this coin are relatively clean, exhibiting just a few minute marks on Liberty's cheek.
From The Carolina Gold Collection, Part Two.
