<B>1842-C $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 3-B. According to branch mint gold authority Douglas Winter, the 1842-C Quarter Eagle is one of the rarest coins of any denomination from the Charlotte Mint, and is the rarest Quarter Eagle from that mint in higher grades. Only 6,729 pieces were struck, and those circulated for nearly twenty years, until the Civil War. This piece is attractive for the grade, as the surfaces have not been brightened, and there are no mentionable handling marks. The lower stars are incompletely brought up, as is the eagle's lower leg, but the overall impression is sharp.
