(1842-52) G$1 A. Bechtler Dollar, 27G. 21C. MS60 PCGS. Plain Edge, K-24, R.3. While it took the U.S. Mint quite a while to start producing gold dollars after the Bechtlers began their gold coinage in 1831--18 years, to be precise--a much more immediate effect was that the Bechtlers forced a better appraisal of the need for circulating coinage outside of the centers of power in the East, leading in 1838 to the establishment of branch mint in Charlotte and Dahlonega. This piece, struck by August Bechtler during the period from 1842-52 or so and certified in a first-generation small PCGS holder, shows excellent luster radiating from the two-toned apricot-gold and reddish-orange surfaces. PCGS appears to have downgraded this coin because there is light field chatter, hairlines, and planchet roughness, but there are no singular abrasions.
