(1842-52)<G$1> A.Bechtler Dollar, 27G. 21C.--Double Clipped Planchet--AU58 PCGS. K-24, R.3. 27.7 grains. Small but noticeable clips are present at 1:30 and 4:30. Mintages of private gold coins were obviously closely inspected, as the credibility of the individual firm was reliant upon private assayers and the public perception of the firm's credibility. In this case, this gold dollar obviously contains less than the stated amount of gold, and the release of such a piece would have been risky for the Bechtler firm. This piece survived the inspection process and has remained in collector's hands since shortly after manufacture. The planchet shows the usual waviness and the coin has rich apricot and steel-blue toning.
