1842<1/2 C> First Restrike. SR-4, B-2, High R.6. PR65 Brown NGC. PR63 EAC. Small date; Small berries, doubled T in CENT. Probably only 14 or 15 examples of this variety are known. In his 1988 Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen stated that about 13 were known. Considerable mint red color is beginning to tone down to light brown with lilac overtones. Bright red frames the reverse, just inside the border.
In his research on the series of Proof Half Cents, Breen devised several different series, or production runs, for the various restrikes known collectively as First Restrikes and Second Restrikes. He differentiated the First Restrikes as Series I, II, and III, and the Second Restrikes as Series IV, V, and VI. Further, he discussed a seventh series, Series VII, being Restrikes from the Large Berries reverse die of Original strikes. This 1842 First Restrike appears to be from Series I, although weight played an important role in Breen's attribution scheme, and with these coins in slabs, the weight is unknown.
Ex: Ellis Robison (Stack's, 2/1982), lot 371; Bowers and Merena (9/1984), lot 815. Envelope Included.
