1841-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Winter 2-C. According to Winter, this is a rare variety and he only cites one example that he has seen (from our 1993 ANA Sale). In overall rarity among Dahlonega Quarter Eagles, the 1841-D is rated eighth of twenty issues, and in high grade rarity it is even scarcer with only 7-9 pieces believed known in the various grades of Almost Uncirculated. This issue is known to be sharply struck; however, this piece is not. It may well be that the coins that have been examined to date have been from the more common 2-B variety and these pieces may be better defined, as is often the case with different die varieties. (A quick check in our 1993 ANA Sale confirmed that piece was also softly struck in the centers). Rich golden-orange color characterizes this coin and the fields are bright and semi-prooflike. The most distinctive pedigree identifier on this example is a strike-through that connects stars 12 and 13. While just outside the Condition Census for the issue, this is unquestionably one of the finest examples known from this rare variety. From the Ashland City Collection.
