1841-C $5 MS61 NGC. Variety 3-C. The fourth half eagle struck at the Charlotte Mint, the 1841-C was produced to the extent of just 21,467 pieces. Surprisingly, this is one of the more common C-mint half eagles from the late 1830s and early 1840s, but it is still a significant rarity in Mint State. Winter ranks this date 17th in high grade rarity among C-mint fives, with AU-Mint State examples being more rare than those of the 1847-C, 1849-C, 1850-C, 1852-C, 1853-C, 1857-C, and 1858-C issues. In fact, with just five or six coins believed extant in Mint State (again, per Winter), the present example qualifies for lower Condition Census standing.
This is a remarkably well struck coin for a product of the early Charlotte Mint. Every feature is boldly, if not sharply detailed. The surfaces alternate between yellow-gold and reddish-gold colors depending on the light angle, and neither side reveals more than the expected number of abrasions for the MS61 designation. Pedigree concerns compel us to mention a moderate reverse abrasion that is below the mintmark and above the E of FIVE.
