1841-C $5 MS60 PCGS. The fourth Half Eagle struck at the Charlotte Mint, the 1841-C was produced to the extent of just 21,467 pieces. Surprisingly, this is one of the more common C-mint Half Eagles from the late 1830s and early 1840s, but it is still a significant rarity in Mint State. Winter ranks this date 17th in high grade rarity among C-mint Fives, with AU-Mint State examples being more rare than those of the 1847-C, 1849-C, 1850-C, 1852-C, 1853-C, 1857-C, and 1858-C deliveries. In fact, with just five or six coins believed extant in Mint State (again, per Winter), the present example easily qualifies for Condition Census standing. This is a remarkably well struck coin for a product of the early Charlotte Mint. Every feature is boldly, if not sharply detailed. The surfaces alternate between olive-gold and orange-gold colors depending on the light angle, and neither side reveals more than the expected number of wispy abrasions for the MS60 designation. Pedigree concerns compel us to mention a moderate reverse abrasion that nearly parallels the top of the eagle's head. We have handled the following Mint State 1841-C Half Eagles: 1. Ex: 1998 Portland ANA Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/98), lot 7634, where it realized $16,100; 1999 FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/99), lot 7884, where it realized $12,650. An MS61 PCGS coin. 2. Ex: February 1999 Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 2/99), lot 6236, where it realized $18,400. Certified MS61 by NGC. 3. Ex: May-June 2001 Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 5/01), lot 8953; April 2002 Central States Signature Sale (Heritage, 4/02), lot 6973. Formerly the property of John Jay Pittman, and slabbed MS64 by NGC at the time of both sales. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
