1841-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 3-C. This is about as sharply struck and well made an example of an 1841-C half eagle as one could hope to find, with excellent detail on both the obverse and the reverse. The surfaces are choice except for two faint scratches in the right obverse field; the reverse is extremely choice. A good amount of the original luster can be seen and a slightly prooflike finish is visible around the borders. The color is lovely with light yellow-gold and greenish hues seen on both sides. This is a pleasing and fresh example with great eye appeal for the date and grade. Housed in an old PCGS holder and conservatively graded by today's standards.
The 1841-C is one of the more available of the early date half eagles struck in the Charlotte mint. Of the 125 or so pieces known, most grade VF or XF. There are an estimated three dozen AUs, but most have been brightened and examples with choice, original surfaces in this grade range are quite rare. The finest known appears to be the Pittman: 953 coin that was later sold by Heritage in January 2004. It is in an NGC MS64 holder.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
