1841-C $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 2-B, the only known dies. This is an important date in the quarter eagle, and examples from all three mints are scarce or rare, particularly the Philadelphia issue. Mintages totaled a small but unknown number from Philadelphia, a meager 4,164 coins from Dahlonega, and 10,281 pieces from the Charlotte Mint, including this example that is one of the few survivors in Mint State. Only three or four pieces actually exist in grades of MS60 or finer, including this piece, the John Pittman coin, and the Byron Reed specimen. The Harry Bass collection included just two examples of this issue, with the finest graded AU58.
This is an impressive piece with brilliant green-gold luster and satiny surfaces. It is sharply struck, including full detail at the centers on each side. A few grade-limiting hairlines are evident, but the overall eye appeal is exceptional. Population: 1 in 62, 0 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
