<B>1841-C<$2 1/2> AU58 NGC.</B></I> Variety 2-B. This lovely piece is a high-end representative of one of the most elusive issues of Carolina gold. By recent estimates, only 70 to 80 examples exist today, most of these in low grades. That makes this piece all the more remarkable, as it has just a hint of highpoint friction. The lemon-yellow surfaces, touched with green, are radiant. This piece has a few flaws, including several long, light abrasions in the obverse fields, marks that are consistent with the majority of this issue. Still, a nicer coin would be exceptionally difficult to acquire. NGC has certified only six pieces in Mint State, a number that likely includes at least one duplicate, and PCGS has encapsulated just one such coin (9/06).
