1841<10C> MS67 NGC. Late in 1840, at the request of Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson, the Mint modified the dime design to take into account Robert Ball Hughes remodeled effigy. In addition to the easily recognizable upright shield and added drapery folds below Liberty's right (facing) elbow, numerous other changes were incorporated into both the obverse and reverse designs. These include larger head and arm features on Liberty's portrait, a small rock, and open buds on the wreath. While these changes doubtless placated the criticism that accompanied Gobrecht's original design, they proved to be an aesthetic and technological blunder. Despite its shortcomings, however, this modified design would remain in use until further refined by James Barton Longacre in 1860.
Although this early issue is relatively obtainable in circulated grades, Mint State representations are elusive and gems such as this are almost unknown. A crisply struck specimen, this piece displays none of the mushiness of detail that often plagues this series. Free of significant contact marks, the surfaces carry a rich blanket of lavender and sea-green patina over both sides. A remarkable example that is of obvious significance to Seated Liberty specialists and type collectors alike. Population: 1 in 67, 1 finer (6/05).
From The Melrose Bay Collection.
