Scarce William Ellsworth Signed Military Appointment
WILLIAM WOLCOTT ELLSWORTH (1791-1868). 30th Governor of Connecticut, U.S. Congressman, and Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.
August 18, 1840-Dated, Partially-Printed Military Document Signed, “W.W. Ellsworth” on Appointment of Dwight Pierce as Major in the 13th Regiment of Infantry in the Connecticut State Militia, Choice Very Fine. This Document measures 10.5” x 16.5” but it is actually the lower portion of a larger piece of paper measuring 21” x 16.5” which was then folded in half, for docketing purposes. The original Paper and Wax Embossed State Seal of Connecticut remains fully intact. The condition of the period wove paper is excellent and retains much of its original brightness. Apparently, Governor Ellsworth’s signature is quite scarce, as we have never handled another.
William Wolcott Ellsworth (November 10, 1791 - January 15, 1868) was a Yale-educated attorney who served as the 30th Governor of Connecticut, a Three-term United States Congressman, a Justice of the State Supreme Court.
