1840<S$1> MS62 NGC. Ex: Norweb, Richmond. While many first-year issues were set aside in large numbers at the time of issue, that was not the case with the 1840 Seated dollar. This is even more curious since no silver dollars had been struck since 1803, and one would think that the mere novelty alone would have inspired many to set this new design aside as mementoes, but that was not the case. As noted in both the Norweb and Richmond catalogs, the reflectivity in the fields of this piece is particularly noteworthy. In the Norweb catalog it was even speculated that this piece might be a possible proof. However, the die diagnostics do not match known proofs of this date, plus there is a bit of striking weakness on the centrils on the obverse stars. Irregular patches of charcoal-gray, blue, and golden toning are scattered over each side with only the slightest hairlines evident with magnification.
Ex: Norweb II (Bowers and Merena, 10/88), lot 3778.
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
