1840-O<H10C> No Drapery XF45 ANACS. V-6, R.6. With the Transitional Open Bud reverse. Bright silver with traces of luster on this well struck coin. The surfaces are pleasing although we note a minor nick touching the lower right tail of the R in AMERICA to the wreath below which will serve to identify this coin. We also note that both dies show strong clash marks and there is a faint die crack from the rim to Liberty left of the date and another crack on the reverse connecting the left side of the right stem end to the rim below. This new reverse style is believed to be the work of Robert B. Hughes, who joined the mint about this time. The wreath features three leaf clusters on both sides of DIME, instead of the prior four leaf clusters, and the buds have a small split in them as though they were about to pop open. A very difficult variety to find in high grades, and this coin should attract considerable attention.
Ex Larry Briggs (2/95).
From The William A.
