1840-O H10C No Drapery AU58 NGC. V-9. This is the discovery coin for this variety. The obverse was used to produce the V-6 variety, but the reverse is a new die. The Gobrecht Journal, issue 59, reported this new variety. Note the downhill slope to the recut date: this is diagnostic on the V-6. The new variety was apparently struck first. The reverse shows die clashing and several minor radial die cracks, as follows: right side of N and T of UNITED; the first T and A (faint) of STATES; the first A, E, and I (faint) of AMERICA; a prominent crack from the right stem end; and extremely faint cracks from both ribbon ends and the other left stem. The entire coin is toned with multicolored iridescent hues and is quite pleasing to the eye. The interesting strike is exceedingly weak on Liberty's head, and the opposing knot on the wreath also lacks full definition. This may have simply been caused by a weak strike (although surrounding areas are sharp), or perhaps it is related to the reverse break from the right stem to the rim. The mintmark is a well centered Small O, placed similarly to the V-3 and V-4 varieties, although the die cracks are different on this specimen. It is reasonable to assume that this reverse was quickly discarded, as it shows a number of die cracks, and that this same obverse die was paired with the new "open bud" reverse die for the V-6 variety.
