1840-O<H10C> No Drapery AU55 ANACS. V-9. The Discovery Coin for this variety. The obverse was used to produce the V-6 variety, but the reverse is a new die. This discovery was reported in The Gobrecht Journal issue #59. Note the downhill slope to the recut date, this is diagnostic on the V-6 variety, and this new variety was apparently struck first. The reverse shows die clashing and several minor radial die cracks as follows, right side of N and T of UNITED, the first T and A (very faint) of STATES, the first A, E and I (very faint) of AMERICA and a prominent crack from the right stem end and very faint cracks from both ribbon ends and the other left stem. The entire coin is toned with multicolored iridescent hues and is quite pleasing to the eye. An interesting strike which is very weak on Liberty's head, and the opposing knot on the wreath also lacks full definition. This may have simply been caused by a slightly weak strike, although surrounding areas of the coin are sharp, or perhaps is related to the reverse die break to the rim from the right stem. ANACS placed this coin in a holder incorrectly labeled as V-4a. On the reverse the mintmark location it is a well centered Small O quite similar in placement to the V-3 and V-4 varieties, although the die cracks are obviously different on this specimen. Certainly one of the more important coins in this extensive collection, although new discoveries are always somewhat speculative as to the number known.
Mr. Harmon noted that it would be reasonable to assume that this reverse was quickly discarded as it obviously shows a number of die cracks, plus this same obverse die was paired with the new "open bud" reverse die for the V-6 variety.
Ex: Kam Ahwash (8/82) as a recut date variety.
From The William A.
