1840-O H10C Drapery MS63 NGC
1840-O H10C Drapery MS63 NGC. V-7, Small Round O. New hubs were introduced for the dime and half dime in 1840. The first half dime to use it is the rare transitional 1840-O No Drapery, Open Bud Reverse V-6 variety. This With Drapery 1840-O half dime is a better date, with a mintage of 240,000 pieces. The new reverse shows open leaf buds and larger letters in the legend, a reverse that was used from 1840-1853. The clusters of leaves on either side of DIME have three leaves, rather than the four on the Closed Bud reverse. This issue has seen fewer than 100 examples certified in all grades by NGC and PCGS, and is rare in Mint State.
This variety combines the V-5 obverse with a different reverse that shows die cracks: One runs through the left side of the U in UNITED to a leaf, while a second passes through I in AMERICA to a bud. Al Blythe rates the date R.7 in Mint State. This Select Uncirculated coin displays medium-intensity multicolored toning resting upon lustrous surfaces, and nicely struck design elements. Both sides are relatively well preserved. Only two MS63s have been certified--one each at NGC and PCGS--and none are finer. Census: 1 in 63, 0 finer (1/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
