1840-O 25C No Drapery MS64 PCGS. Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty quarter made its debut in 1838 with a mintage of 466,000 pieces. The Philadelphia Mint produced a further 491,146 coins in 1839, followed by the New Orleans Mint's initial delivery of 382,200 pieces in 1840. These three issues are unique in that they are the only coins in the Seated quarter series that do not show extra drapery folds at Liberty's right (facing ) elbow. The 1840-O No Drapery is even more distinct from the 1838 and 1839 in that the denticles on the obverse are small and, in some cases essentially non-existent. This feature results in greater field area around Liberty's portrait and the peripheral star. The present golden-gray piece offers subtle satin luster across the lightly marked fields. The strike is crisp and lacks the often-seen softness of detail over the star centrils, Liberty's head, and the eagle's claws. For pedigree purposes, we mention a small spot near star 7. This is the finest PCGS-certified example of this scarce issue. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
