1840-O $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. The 1840-O is an unheralded first-year O-mint of a new type, the familiar Liberty Head series, and as such it is likely overshadowed by the 1839-O quarter eagle of the Classic Head series. It is also underrated compared to the more-illustrious Charlotte- and Dahlonega-mintmarked pieces of the era. Nonetheless, an examination of Heritage's auction records reveals that in the past dozen-plus years, this is only the third time we have offered an MS62 specimen of this elusive issue, and we have never offered a finer one--indeed, there are few finer coins known. This issue was a favorite of Harry W. Bass Jr., who owned seven examples.
The present piece shows the typical softness in the centers on both sides, with weakness noted in Liberty's hair and on the eagle's neck and lower left (facing) leg. The luster is radiant, however, and the surfaces are moderately prooflike. This piece is one of seven so graded at PCGS, with none finer, while NGC has certified five MS62 pieces and a single MS63 (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
