1840-O $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Mostly brilliant surfaces are highlighted by blushes of lemon-gold. Much original mint luster still survives around the stars, letters, numerals, and other design elements. Softly struck in areas; most prominently on the eagle's right leg (viewer's left) and the neck. The 1840-O has a moderately small mintage of 33,580 pieces, but really was not appreciated in the upper echelons of condition until David Akers wrote his United States Gold Coins: An Analysis of Auction Records series. The volume on quarter eagles appeared in 1975. Akers recognized the 1840-O as scarce in all grades and an important rarity above the XF level, a perception that is still borne out today by the population report data published by the major grading services. Population: 5 in 58, 10 finer (12/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
