Proof. Smithsonian Institution.

Every individual die element is intricately and impeccably detailed with the solitary exception of the lower obverse border that shows slight weakness. Deeply mirrored fields are visible beneath a wonderful rainbow on both sides. The surfaces exhibit steel-blue, pale gold, russet, and heather toning. The central motifs, Liberty and the wreath, have substantial mint frost, although the contrast is not immediately evident.
Breen narrowed the striking period of the small, unknown mintage to the second and third quarters of the year. A single die pair, unknown to Valentine, was used to coin all proof 1840 No Drapery half dimes. Star 10 is sharply doubled and some other stars are minutely doubled. The digit 4 has a thin, flat top, only slightly separated from the interior triangular space. Diagonal die polish lines in the reverse field slant down to the left and right in a tilted, criss-cross pattern. Census: 3 in 66, 0 finer (6/07).
From The Phil Kaufman Collection of Early Proof Sets, Part One. (#4416)

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
