1840-D $5 Tall D MS61 PCGS. Variety 3-B. Since only 22,896 half eagles were struck in 1840 at Dahlonega, it is surprising that the issue has two distinctive varieties, the Small D and the Tall D mintmark. The present piece has ample luster that diminishes only slightly across the open fields. The strike is sharp on the eagle, and Liberty's curls are also bold save for moderate blending on the lovelock. Although difficult in any grade, the 1840-D is typically in XF or AU condition when found unimpaired. Mint State examples are formidable rarities, especially given the enormous demand from competitive Southern gold specialists. Karl Stecher, Sr. purchased this piece from the Guttag Bros. of New York during the 1930s. A Guttag Bros. envelope is included, and is noted "1840 $5 Gold D Mint Ex Fine."Population: 3 in 61, 2 finer (1/07).
From The Stecher Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
