1840-D $5 Tall D MS61 NGC. Variety 3-B.
1840-D<$5> Tall D MS61 NGC. Variety 3-B. A meticulously struck yellow-gold representative that exhibits pleasing surfaces for the grade. A curious lump beneath the final star is as made, and was caused a small dent on the obverse die. A small rim nick is noted at 10:30 on the reverse, and the reverse rim has a slight depression near the F in OF. A couple of tiny pits near star 12 are of mint origin. The 1840-D is the first half eagle issue with the D mintmark located on the reverse. Two different mintmark punches were used to strike the allotment of 22,896 pieces; a Small D (Variety 4-C) and a Tall D. The latter is less rare, although any 1840-D in Mint State is significant, since a combined total of only 13 examples are certified by such as NGC and PCGS (2/06).
From The Duke's Creek Collection of Dahlonega Gold.
