1840-D<$5> Tall D MS61 NGC. Ex: Duke's Creek. Variety 3-B. This lovely orange-gold example offers pleasing and attractive surfaces for the grade, with some prooflikeness in evidence on each side. There is a small die lump noted beneath star 13, apparently caused by a dented obverse die, and a bit of struck-in grease is noted near star 12. The bold strike has clearly delineated the hair on Liberty, the beaded hair cord, the forecurl, and all star centrils. On the reverse, the eagle is also well sculpted, showing no apparent weakness. Only light abrasions and ticks are noted, but the overall impression of one of enormous eye appeal. The Duke's Creek pedigree behind this coin only adds to its considerable allure. The 1840 half eagles are the first to have the mintmark on the reverse rather than the obverse. Although the Tall D mintmark variety is found more frequently than the Small D variety (Variety 4-C), any Mint State 1840-D is elusive and desirable. NGC and PCGS combined have certified only six pieces in MS61, with six finer (9/06). Gold specialists will recognize this coin for the special opportunity that it presents.
