1840-D $5 Tall D AU53 NGC. Variety 3-B. Seldom seen better than Extremely Fine, the 1840-D is a first-year subtype, as the design was modified from the 1839 portrait, and the mintmark was placed on the reverse, where it would subsist until 1907. This variety is easily distinguished by the die defect touching star 13, which extends from the rim, and the Tall D on the reverse bears an opening that is more than "twice the width of its upright," as Winter says. Although Breen believed that Broad Mill (wide-diameter 22.5-mm coins) were struck, all of the later research indicates that only Narrow Mill pieces exist, with a 21.7-mm width.
Regardless of variety, the 1840-D as an issue is rare in AU or finer condition. The present specimen boasts a sharp obverse strike, with moderate reverse softness on the eagle's legs and neck, and the fletchings. Considerable luster and a relative paucity of singular abrasions complete the attractive package. Census: 5 in 53, 26 finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
