1840-D $5 Narrow Mill MS61 NGC. Winter 3-B. The design of Liberty was modified slightly in 1840 to the design it would retain until 1908. However, in this first year two diameters were used. This is the more frequently encountered Narrow Rim variant. Only 85-95 pieces are known today in all grades out of the original mintage of 22,896 pieces. A mere 4-5 Mint State coins are believed extant with this piece tied with the North Georgia coin as fourth finest. The surfaces lack the often-seen planchet laminations that are so often encountered. Both obverse and reverse are peppered with numerous small abrasions that account for the grade, the most obvious of which are shallow, light pinscratching below the date and a field mark below the E in STATES. The surfaces are bright orange-gold and the fields are semi-reflective with some satiny luster intermixed. From the Ashland City Collection.
