<B>1840 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 352.</B></I> A slightly convex diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole for suspension, 55mm x 56mm. Manufactured by William M. Rouse, a local silversmith and son of a well-known leather tanner whose family owned a number of slaves. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "*CHARLESTON*" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; "1840" bar punched; "SERVANT" in a rectangular bar punch with a dotted border; and an incuse "352" in individual punches. The condition is very fine; the patina is dark with olive green highlights. <BR><BR>It is estimated that 4191 badges were issued with the 18409 date.
