1840-C $5 MS60 NGC. Winter 2-B. Die State I. The 1840-C is very rare in all grades with only 70-80 pieces known today. In terms of overall rarity among C-mint Half Eagles, the 1840-C ranks second after the 1842-C Small Date. Until the appearance of this piece, the only other unquestionably Uncirculated '40-C Fives were the Pittman coin (later graded MS64 by NGC) and the Elrod/Milas MS60. Well struck throughout with strong definition on the central devices as well as the peripheries. The surfaces are a bit lackluster, as expected for this issue, and the fields are lightly marked on each side. The only mentionable abrasions are a shallow horizontal scrape in the left obverse field between stars 4 and 5, and a nick in the upper reverse field between the eagle's head and the TE of STATES. Rich olive-golden color. From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
