1840-C $5 MS60 NGC. Ex: Ashland City. Variety 2-B. Die State I. The 1840-C is very rare in all grades, with only 70-80 pieces known today. In terms of overall rarity among C-mint half eagles, the 1840-C ranks second after the 1842-C Small Date. Until the appearance of this piece, the only other unquestionably Uncirculated 1840-C fives were the Pittman coin (later graded MS64 by NGC) and the Elrod/Milas MS60. The present piece is well struck throughout, with strong definition on the central devices as well as the peripheries. Most (more likely all) examples of this issue--including the Pittman coin, all three Bass examples, and the present piece--show the remains of apparent misplaced digits on the obverse rim just above the denticles, perhaps a 18. Curiously, there are small areas of die scratches or die file marks by the denticles closest to each star; they vary slightly, the most prominent at the 13th star. This curious characteristic was also present on the Pittman example. The surfaces are a bit lackluster, as expected for the issue, and the fields are lightly marked on each side. The only mentionable abrasions are a shallow horizontal scrape in the left obverse field between stars 4 and 5, and a nick in the upper reverse field between the eagle's head and the TE of STATES. Both sides offer rich olive-gold color. Census: 2 in 60, 2 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
