1840-C $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 2-B, Die State I. The "perfect reverse die," without the crack that protrudes from 4 o'clock on the rim on the later die state. The 1840-C issue marked yet another change in the half eagle design; Gobrecht's portrait of Liberty underwent minor modifications, and the mintmark moved from the space between the truncation and the date to the area below the eagle, where it would remain until the end of the design. The mintage of 18,956 pieces faced extensive circulation, and in the words of Winter (1997), the issue "is one of the least available Charlotte half eagles."
This luminous mustard-gold representative has a soft strike, obligatory for this issue, but the satiny surfaces show only a trace of actual wear on the highpoints. The devices are lightly marked overall with a diagonal abrasion that crosses the cheek, yet the piece remains uncommonly appealing for the issue. A single alloy spot is noted below the tip of the eagle's beak. Census: 7 in 58, 5 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
