1840-C $5 AU58 NGC. Variety 2-B, Die State I. A rare and illustrious issue, one that has been noted for many years for its elusiveness. Winter calls it the second rarest of all C-mint half eagles, behind only the 1842-C Small Date. The 1840-C is also the first issue struck with the C mintmark on the reverse, rather than the obverse. In this die state, the reverse die crack from the rim to the I in AMERICA is as yet unformed. This medium yellow-gold piece shows a typically weak strike through the centers, with softness noted on Liberty's hair highpoints and on the shield, the eagle's neck, and the upper legs and fletchings. Yet much luster resides on the surfaces, and there are no major planchet irregularities, unlike so many coins of this issue. Garrett and Guth note, "An example of the 1840-C in About Uncirculated must be considered rare." Census: 7 in 58, 4 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
