1840-C $5 AU55 PCGS
1840-C $5 AU55 PCGS. Variety 2-B. Well struck on a good planchet. This piece lacks the rough appearance that is seen on a number of 1840-C half eagles and it deserves a premium as such. The surfaces are somewhat "ticky" with some marks clearly seen in the obverse fields; the reverse has an old, thin scratch past the D in the denomination and a few marks behind the eagle's head. At least half the original mint luster clings to the surfaces and this coin has clearly not been dipped or brightened as have so many examples of this date. The obverse has some attractive reddish-orange color, located primarily at the upper half of that side, while the reverse shows similar but more extensive hues. This is a nice coin for the grade that is accurately graded and original.
The 1840-C is among the rarest half eagles from this mint both in high grade and from the standpoint of overall rarity. There are an estimated 100-125 pieces known with most of these grading XF45 or lower. Properly graded AU examples are rare and the PCGS and NGC population figures are severely inflated by resubmissions. There are three or four examples known in Uncirculated with the finest of these, an NGC MS64, Ex: Farouk/Pittman, recently sold by Heritage (March 2007) for $79,500.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
